INTRODUCTION

The VRSS-2 Satellite System Program was signed between China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC), a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science & Technology Corporation (CASC), and the Ministry of People's Power for University Education, Science and Technology (MPPEUCT) of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on October 5, 2014. As the prime contractor, CGWIC worked together with its subcontractors, China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) and China Satellite Launch and Tracking Control General (CLTC), to in-orbit deliver an optical remote sensing satellite for Venezuela, upgrade the VRSS-1 ground control system and ground application system, upgrade the 5.4m SiRGIS station, provide two sets of satellite engineering models for ground test, training and supporting services. During the execution of the program, a Venezuelan joint team collaboratively participates into the development of the satellite and the ground application system.

This program is the first high-resolution remote sensing satellite program contracted by China Aerospace and an International Customer, meanwhile the third space program between China and Venezuela after the successful inorbit delivery of Venesat-1 Satellite (2008) and VRSS-1 Satellite (2012).

MPPEUCT, the end-user of VRSS-2 program, is committed to the establishment and development of the aerospace industry and technologies of Venezuela. Agencia Bolivariana para Actividades Espaciales (ABAE), subordinated to MPPEUCT, is the Venezuelan space agency who takes charge of the in-orbit operation, management and application of the VRSS-2 satellite.

The launch mission is the 33rd flight of LM-2D launch vehicle and also marks the 252nd launch of Long March family.

The VRSS-2 Satellite is an optical remote sensing satellite orbiting in the SSO. Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, named the satellite as Sucre Satellite after the independence hero Antonio José de Sucre, also known as the "Grand Marshal of Ayacucho".

VRSS-2 Satellite is Venezuela's second remote sensing satellite, which will be mainly used in the fields of resource investigation, environmental protection, disaster monitoring and management etc. It will play an important role in developing national economy, improving the people's livelihood as well as promoting social progress.
